Be Part of the Bigger Picture: Habitat Mapping for Corridor Land Managers

By W2W - 19 May 2025

To support our members' work with nature recovery, we are giving free habitat mapping support to our land managers within the Weald to Waves corridor, as part of our pledging process. Over the past 12 months, Ryan our Landscape Advisor has been undertaking site visits to our diverse network, from mixed farms and estates to smallholdings and golf courses.

As part of registering as a member, land managers within the corridor now go onto a waiting list for a site visit, where we offer advice, starting with a whole-landholding approach to discuss the opportunities and challenges for nature recovery, while mapping the habitats and land use to support decision-making.

To undertake mapping on this scale, we use LandApp, an online tool developed to support land managers, with existing landscape information displayed alongside datasets from the Rural Payments Agency and other valuable information to support your decision making. It also ensures our land managers retain control of their data! Using the UK Habitat Classification (UKHABs), we have mapped over 8,200 hectares across 51 landholdings, helping managers gain valuable insight into existing habitats and future potential.

This work also plays a crucial role in a larger picture. Each map feeds into our connectivity modelling for Sussex, helping us understand how individual landholdings contribute to wildlife corridors and habitat networks across the region—from the High Weald to the coast. This ensures that every action taken locally contributes meaningfully to nature recovery at scale.

If you're landholding is within the corridor and you're interested in learning more, we’d love to hear from you!
